Imaging e-Ordering Coalition Sends Letter to MedPAC on Prior Authorization and CPOE/CDS

Earlier today, the Imaging e-Ordering Coalition (an alliance of practice/industry leaders and imaging-related organizations, including ACR and RBMA) submitted a letter to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) in support of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems with integrated clinical decision support (CDS) tied to national appropriateness criteria guidelines.

MedPAC is an independent Congressional agency established by the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 to advise Congress on issues affecting the Medicare program.  MedPAC’s recent discussions included, among many other things, a suggestion that certain Medicare-participating physicians be required to obtain prior authorization when ordering advanced diagnostic imaging services in outpatient settings.

The Imaging e-Ordering Coalition’s letter promotes the idea that CPOE/CDS solutions are ideal for ensuring that patients receive the most medically appropriate diagnostic imaging test for their given clinical condition. Unlike the alternatives, CDS assists, but does not dictate or interfere with, the ordering physician’s decision-making process.
