Meaningful Use Workgroup to Develop Specialty Recommendations for Stage 2

During today’s virtual meeting, the HIT Policy Committee’s (HITPC) Meaningful Use (MU) Workgroup decided to develop Stage 2 MU recommendations related to specialized medicine. They will focus on this new activity following the expected approval of the primary Stage 2 MU recommendations at the HITPC meeting on June 8.

With these new specialty-related recommendations, the Workgroup intends to focus on exclusion criteria for certain core MU functionality measures and prospective new functionality measures and clinical quality measures related to specialized medicine. One area of focus will be documentation/summaries of care for specialists. Dr. Paul Tang, Chair of the MU Workgroup, mentioned the possibility of including imaging related items in these new recommendations. This plan was developed in response to the lessons learned at the May 13 public hearing on MU and specialists.

To have any effect on the upcoming Stage 2 rulemakings at ONC and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Workgroup will need to complete their specialty recommendations within the next few months.
