ONC’s Annual Report to Congress; HIT Standards Committee Clinical Operations Workgroup Continues Exploration of Image Exchange

June 27, 2013 1 comment

On June 27, the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for HIT (ONC) announced the release of its annual report to Congress as required by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  The report broadly covers ONC’s efforts to facilitate the nationwide adoption of HIT and advance health information exchange.  It provides the status of various ONC-administered initiatives, including the Regional Extension Center program, product certification, HIT workforce development, and more.

In unrelated news, the ONC HIT Standards Committee Clinical Operations Workgroup will continue its preliminary exploration of image exchange use cases and standards during its virtual meeting tomorrow (June 28 – 11AM Eastern).  Previously, the workgroup covered the RSNA image sharing pilot during its June 14 virtual meeting, and is now exploring other methods of image exchange as they relate to certain use cases (clinician-to-patient, clinician-to-clinician, and network-sharing).  The workgroup will eventually report its findings to the full HIT Standards Committee.

On June 10, the American College of Radiology submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) regarding the proposed rules to renew/revise the EHR exception and safe harbor to self-referral and anti-kickback requirements.

ACR’s comments focused on the “referral trapping” and EHR/RIS/PACS interoperability concerns recently mentioned in the association’s response to the Request for Information from CMS and the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for HIT on “Advancing Interoperability and Health Information Exchange.”
